Coffee is synonymous with Colombia. The history of the nation and the goods were woven just before the first
major production boom in the 1870s. About 550,000 Colombian families live on coffee. Production in Colombia is predominantly in the hands of smallholders who process their own crops. About 60% of national production comes from farms under 5 hectares. The Columbia Coffee Triangle is famous for growing most of the coffee in Colombia. It stretches over different departments: Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda and Tolima. The area has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as the "Cultural Landscape of Coffee" because it is an exceptional example of a cultural, sustainable and productive landscape - a historic milestone for the country.
