Guatemala is a fascinating country, with a rich indigenous culture and amazing natural habitats. The most striking features of its landscape are the 37 volcanoes, many of them still active. These volcanoes are not only attractive to travelers to discover, but also mark the distinctive characters found in Guatemalan cafes. Located in the northwest, on the border with Mexico, Huehuetenango has become one of the most famous coffee growing areas in the country.
The name "Huehuetenango" comes from the historical Aztec language Nahuatl and translates as "place of ancestors". The height in this area reaches from 300 to 3850 meters, creating a microclimate with ideal conditions for growing coffee. However, this coffee is grown only on mountain slopes between 1350 and 2000 meters, classifying itself for strictly hard beans (SHB).
Due to the high altitude, these grains grow more slowly than usual, having a higher density, ie building a very hard core. This is favored by intense exposure to the sun during the day, while cold and humid winds cool the area at night. Along with the higher density comes a complex abundance of citrus and fruity aromas that position Huehuetenango coffee as one of the best gourmet coffees in the world.
